What is Hypertension?

Hypertension is defined as a blood pressure that consistently measure above normal. Your blood pressure changes throughout the day based on your activities. Blood pressure readings above normal on more than two visits to your healthcare provider will result in a diagnosis of hypertension.

What is Normal blood pressure?

Normal blood pressure is a measurement lower than 120 millimetres of mercury for the top number and 80 millimetres of mercury for the lower number.

There is a leeway of 10 millimetres of mercury in either direction, to compensate for daily activities and posture that may influence blood pressure readings.

Risk factors for the development of Hypertension

The risk factors for the development of Hypertension are divided into non-modifiable and modifiable risk factors.

Non-modifiable risk factors are things that we cannot control or change, these include:

  • a family history of hypertension;
  • age over 65 years; and
  • co-existing diseases such as diabetes or kidney disease.

Modifiable risk factors are things we can control or change to reduce the risk of developing hypertension, these include:

  • unhealthy diets (excessive salt consumption, a diet high in saturated fat and trans fats, low intake of fruits and vegetables);
  • physical inactivity;
  • consumption of tobacco and alcohol; and
  • being overweight or obese.
